Coordinator of Clinical Laboratory Learning
The Clinical Learning Lab is managed by a full-time Coordinator of Clinical Laboratory Learning, a Master’s prepared nurse educator with continuing education in simulation pedagogy. The Coordinator personally supervises all educational activities in both lab settings and supports the faculty’s use of the lab. The Coordinator provides individual and group competency verification and promotes critical thinking through dialogue. The Coordinator is also available to students seeking individual assessment, feedback and instruction to improve clinical skills.
Clinical Learning Lab
The Clinical Learning Lab in Loser Hall 009 engages students in active learning in a simulated hospital-based patient care environment. This learning lab houses two adult high-fidelity simulators (computerized mannequins) which are used for basic skill verification through complex teamwork scenarios. The lab also utilizes a “pregnant” simulator, allowing students to understand and participate in the birth process. An infant high-fidelity simulator is also available to enhance pediatric assessment skills.
This classroom/lab facility blends a traditional learning environment with a highly sophisticated hospital simulation area. The classroom portion has seating for a maximum of 24 students. A variety of additional mannequins of various technical sophistication create realistic situations for student skill development, including injections, catheteriztions, bandaging, and tracheostomy and ostomy care.
Students are exposed to monitoring units and medication administering devices that help to prepare them for safety and quality patient care.
A full set of simulated charts allows students to monitor patients and respond to and document patient assessments and interventions.
Medication administration is incorporated into all scenarios. The Intravenous (IV) catheter insertion simulator permits students to practice placement of IVs.
Outpatient Care Lab
The Out-patient Care Lab provides students with the opportunity to explore a setting that resembles office/clinic-based practices. This resource is primarily used to develop assessment skills.
This classroom/lab combination features eight examination tables allowing students to practice physical examination techniques with live subjects. The examination lab simulates the more autonomous environment of a clinic, permiting students to experience a more diagnostic setting.
The Department of Nursing computer lab, located in the basement of Loser Hall, features 16 PC work stations. The lab is located on the same floor as most of the nursing courses, and is easily accessible between or after classes. The lab is only accessible with valid student ID.
A Help Desk support staff member is available during regular hours of operation.
The computer lab hours are:
Monday through Thursday – 8:00 AM to 11:00 PM
Friday – 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Saturday – 12:00 noon to 5:00 PM
Sunday – 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM
