About M. Elizabeth Teixeira
Dr. Teixeira is an Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing, Health, and Exercise Science. Dr. Teixeira has a diverse nursing background with experience in medical-surgical nursing, home care, community, administration, and education. Her clinical and research expertise lie in the prevention and management of obesity and Type 2 Diabetes. She has several publications and presentations related to diabetes and its complications. Her dissertation entitled “The effect of mindfulness meditation for diabetic peripheral neuropathy in adults older than 50 years” was published in Holistic Nursing Practice (2010). Dr. Teixeira also was a contributory author for a chapter in a clinician guided text on Painful Diabetic Neuropathy (2013). Most recently, Dr. Teixeira was awarded a SOSA grant for 2015-2017 to continue research investigation related to the challenges living with diabetes. Dr. Teixeira is also a Co-Investigator for the SNACK (Smart Nutrition and Conditioning for Kids) Study, a team effort by Nursing and HES to teach second graders the skills to make long lasting healthy habits to help prevent obesity and diabetes.
In addition, Dr. Teixeira has experience with graduate curriculum, in particular Adult-Gerontology Primary Care, designed to prepare nurse practitioner students to diagnose and manage the unique needs and health problems encountered by older adults across the continuum. Her expertise in this specialty lead to an appointment as a Content Expert Panelist (CEP) for the Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner Certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), an internationally renowned credentialing organization. To maintain her own certification and stay current with clinical practice, Dr. Teixeira continues a practice with Hightstown Medical Associates, an Internal Medicine Group that provides primary care to adults/older adults, located in West Windsor, New Jersey. There she see patients for acute and chronic problems, provides diabetes education and weight management, and precepts Family and Adult-Gerontology nurse practitioner students.
