TCNJ Dept. of Nursing – Katherine Kerkendall, Jasmine Matthews, Shruti Patel, Kristen Stefanelli and Julie Tran.   The College of New Jersey, Department of Nursing added Community-Engaged Learning to the Freshman curriculum in 1998 in an effort to bring real-life community concerns into the classroom.  The Nursing curriculum added this pedagogy to the Wellness Development Across the Lifespan course in an effort to engage nursing students with vulnerable populations.  Each fall semester between 65-75 students provide 30 hours of service to our communities which has provided almost 29,000 total hours of service since 2000.  Community engaged or service-learning is a form of experiential education which includes the key concepts of reflection and reciprocity, provides opportunities for active and engaged citizenship, and fosters hands-on understanding of class, power and privilege.  Shruti, Kristen and Julie have continued to volunteer after the completion of this course.
