Who are these programs for?
These programs are for RNs with a BSN who wish to practice nursing in a Pre-School, Elementary, or High School setting. The School Nurse MSN is for school nurses who wish to gain further knowledge and add to their educational credentials.
What is the difference between the Non-Instructional and Instructional School Nursing Certificates?
The Non-Instructional Certificate prepares students to perform nursing services in public schools in grades preschool – 12. This endorsement does not authorize the holder to teach in health-related areas. The Instructional Certificate prepares students to perform nursing services and to teach in areas related to health in public schools in grades preschool through 12.
How long are the programs?
The Non-Instructional Certificate can be completed in one academic year. The Instructional Certificate requires an additional academic year of part-time study. The School Nurse MSN can be completed in 4 -5 Semesters of part-time study. Students have up to 6 years to complete any of the programs.
What is the average class size?
Typical classes are small, ranging from an average of 6 students to 24 per class.
Where and when do they meet?
All lecture and seminar classes are held on The College of New Jersey campus. Most classes meet in the evening with some exceptions. Practicum hours take place during the regular school day.
How many practicum hours are required for each program?
The School Nurse Non-Instructional Certificate requires 120 hours of practicum. The School Nurse Instructional Certificate requires an additional 120 hours of practicum experience. The School Nurse MSN does not require additional practicum hours, but there are 35 hours of clinical experience included in NURS 633 Advanced Holistic Health Assessment.
How many days per week are spent at each practicum site?
The Non-Instructional and Instructional Certificates each require about 8 hours/week of practicum during School Nurse Practicum I and II respectively. Actual hours and days vary by assigned practicum site.
Where will I do my practicum?
Practical experiences take place in public schools under the guidance of experienced school nurse preceptors.
What do I need to know about the faculty?
The Faculty comprises dedicated nursing professionals representing a wide range of roles. All School Nursing practicum by certified school nurses. Our faculty members are highly student-focused, and make themselves available and approachable to students both in and out of the classroom.
What options do you offer for distance learning or online classes?
We currently do not offer distance learning options. The School of Nursing at The College of New Jersey places great emphasis on its role in developing a community of nursing professionals through intensive mentoring and fostering of collegial relationships. We have found that the interactions necessary to achieve these goals occur best in an interactive classroom setting.
Do you offer weekend courses?
The College of New Jersey does not currently offer any weekend course options.
